Hormone Testing

Hormones influence everything from your menstrual cycle and fertility to your energy, mood, sleep, weight, and skin. They also change throughout the day, across the menstrual cycle, and through different stages of life, which is why timing and context matter just as much as the numbers themselves.

Who it's for

Who is this test for?

  • Irregular, heavy, or changing menstrual cycles
  • Fatigue, low mood, or low libido
  • Perimenopausal changes such as hot flashes or sleep disruption
  • Acne, unwanted hair growth, or other signs of hormonal shifts
  • Symptoms that come and go across your cycle
  • Wanting a clear starting point before hormone support

The most useful hormone testing starts with your symptoms and health history, not a one-size-fits-all panel. We choose the right tests at the right time and interpret the results alongside how you're actually feeling to build a clearer picture of your hormonal health.

How do you decide how and which hormones to test?

Hormone testing is personalized to your symptoms, menstrual cycle, and stage of life. Rather than ordering the same panel for everyone, we recommend the tests that are most likely to answer your specific questions.

Depending on your needs, testing may include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, FSH, LH, prolactin, and cortisol, along with a comprehensive thyroid panel, since thyroid and reproductive hormones often contribute to many of the same symptoms.

The goal isn't to collect more numbers, it’s to understand which hormones are relevant, how they fit together, and what they may mean for your health.

“A test result without clinical context is hard to act on. We choose the right test, interpret it against functional ranges, and turn it into a plan. That's the difference between ordering a kit and getting answers.”

Why timing changes the result

For cycling women, some hormones only make sense when measured on the right day. Progesterone, for example, is typically checked in the luteal phase, and a result read at the wrong point in the cycle can be misleading. We plan the timing with you so the values actually reflect what is happening.

Blood, urine, or saliva: which hormone test is best?

Each method answers a slightly different question, so the best one depends on what you need to know. Blood gives an accurate snapshot of hormone levels at a moment in time and is often the practical starting point. Dried-urine testing, such as the DUTCH test, adds detail on how your body processes hormones and maps your daily cortisol rhythm. We help you choose, and if a deeper hormone-metabolism picture is warranted, we cover the DUTCH test in full on its own page.

What about coverage

When we order hormone bloodwork as naturopathic doctors, it is paid privately rather than covered through provincial healthcare. Many extended health plans offer coverage for naturopathic visits and testing, but every plan is different. We recommend checking your benefits ahead of time to understand what may be reimbursed.

What happens after the results?

You leave with an explanation and a plan, not a set of values to interpret alone. Depending on what the testing shows, your care may include nutrition and lifestyle strategies, targeted supplementation, or, when clinically indicated, prescription therapies such as hormone replacement therapy for perimenopause, menopause, or other hormone-related concerns. We decide what is right for you together, based on your results and goals.

Frequently asked questions

What hormones are included in a hormone test?

That depends on your symptoms, but a female hormone panel may include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, FSH, LH, prolactin, and cortisol, often with thyroid markers. We select the hormones that are relevant to your situation rather than running a fixed list for everyone.

When in my cycle should I get hormones tested?

For some hormones, timing is essential: progesterone is usually measured in the second half of the cycle, for example. We will tell you the right day to give your sample so the results are meaningful, and we plan around your cycle if it is irregular.

Is hormone testing covered by OHIP?

When we order hormone bloodwork as naturopathic doctors, it is paid privately rather than covered through provincial healthcare. Many extended health plans offer coverage for naturopathic visits and testing, but every plan is different. We recommend checking your benefits ahead of time to understand what may be reimbursed.

What is the difference between blood hormone testing and the DUTCH test?

Blood testing measures hormone levels at a point in time, while the DUTCH test uses dried-urine samples to show how your body processes hormones and to map your daily cortisol rhythm. They suit different questions, and we help you decide which one, or which combination, fits your needs.
