Functional Nutrition

Functional nutrition starts from your bloodwork, symptoms, hormones, and history rather than a generic template. From there, we identify what your body needs more of, less of, or at different timing, and build a way of eating that addresses the underlying drivers and fits your life.

Functional nutrition: is your diet working as hard as you are?

Food influences nearly every system in the body: hormones, blood sugar, gut health, energy, mood, skin, and metabolism. That’s exactly why generic diets often fall short. Your body isn’t a template, and the right nutrition approach depends on your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and what your body is asking for.

Functional nutrition starts with understanding the why behind your symptoms and is assessment-first. Before changing your plate, we establish what's driving your symptoms, what your labs show and where your current diet is genuinely falling short. Often, the missing piece isn’t eating “better”, it’s knowing what your body specifically needs.

You may benefit from an assessment if you experience:

  • Energy crashes, especially mid-afternoon
  • Cravings that feel difficult to control
  • Digestive symptoms without a clear cause
  • Difficulty creating meals that keep you satisfied and full
  • A history of restrictive dieting or cycling through food rules
  • Ongoing symptoms despite “eating healthy”
  • Confusion from conflicting nutrition advice
  • A health condition or diagnosis that changes your nutritional needs
“You don’t need another set of food rules. You need a plan that actually fits your life and goals. Together, we’ll create an approach to nutrition that feels supportive, realistic, and built around what your body needs.”

What gets in the way of nutrition working?

Nutrient Depletion

Low levels of key nutrients like iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and magnesium are common concerns for many women, especially with heavy periods, plant-based diets, restrictive eating patterns, or increased nutritional needs. Nutrient deficiencies can contribute to fatigue, low mood, hair changes, brain fog, and reduced exercise recovery, even before they become more obvious.

Blood Sugar Instability

Blood sugar regulation plays an important role in energy, cravings, mood, and hormone health. Meals that are low in protein, fibre, or healthy fats and higher in refined carbohydrates can contribute to blood sugar spikes and crashes, leaving you feeling tired, irritable, hungry, or reaching for quick energy throughout the day. Building balanced meals can help support more stable energy and appetite signals.

Under-Eating or Chronic Dieting

Many women have spent years dieting, restricting, or following food rules that don’t meet their body’s needs. Consistently under-eating, especially too little protein or overall energy, can affect metabolism, menstrual cycles, mood, and exercise performance. Eating enough is often an important part of supporting better health.

The Wrong Pattern for Your Physiology

There is no single “perfect” way to eat. Meal timing, eating patterns, macronutrient balance, sleep, stress, and activity levels all interact with your hormones and metabolism. Sometimes the foods themselves aren’t the issue, the way they’re structured throughout your day may be the missing piece.

What testing guides your nutrition plan?

There’s no one-size-fits-all nutrition plan. We start by understanding your symptoms, health history, eating patterns, relationship with food, and goals. When needed, bloodwork can help uncover areas that may need support, including iron levels, B12, vitamin D, thyroid function, and blood sugar regulation.

We use testing to get curious: not to chase perfect numbers. Your history matters too. If you’ve spent years dieting, restricting, or feeling overwhelmed by nutrition advice, we take a different approach, focusing on adding the nutrients and habits your body needs rather than creating more rules.

What does functional nutrition care look like?

Functional nutrition care is practical, personalized, and focused on helping you understand what your body needs. You’ll leave with clear priorities, not another set of confusing food rules. Together, we’ll look at what foods to add more of, where small changes may make the biggest difference, how to structure meals to support energy, hormones, blood sugar, and overall wellbeing, and when targeted supplements may be helpful.

Follow-ups are used to fine-tune your plan based on your symptoms, lifestyle, and how your body responds over time. When appropriate, we may repeat relevant labs to help track progress and guide next steps.

We work alongside your existing healthcare team, and recommendations are grounded in evidence-informed care.

How Somewhere Health helps

Care starts with the bigger picture rather than a single test. If you've already been diagnosed, we build on what you know. If you suspect something deeper but have never had a full workup, we can order the testing that gets you clear answers.

Your first visit is 75 minutes with a licensed naturopathic doctor who has reviewed your full intake. Together you'll create a plan that may include nutrition and lifestyle changes, targeted supplementation, and functional testing where appropriate. Bloodwork happens at any LifeLabs or Dynacare, and specialty panels like the DUTCH test ship to your door.

Appointments are completely virtual, so you can access care from anywhere in Ontario, and visits are covered by most extended health benefits plans.

How is this different from seeing a dietitian?

There's overlap, and we refer to dietitians when their scope fits best. The naturopathic difference is the integration: your nutrition plan is built alongside assessment of hormones, digestion, labs and supplements within one clinical picture, and we can order and interpret relevant testing as part of the same care.

Will I get a meal plan?

If a structured plan helps you, yes. Many patients do better with frameworks: how to build a plate, what a day of eating looks like, and swaps for the meals they already cook. We match the format to how you actually live rather than handing everyone the same PDF.

Do I have to give up sugar, carbs or coffee?

Rarely. Blanket food restrictions are rarely the answer. Instead, we look at how different foods and eating patterns affect your symptoms, blood sugar, hormones, and overall wellbeing. When changes are recommended, they’re based on your individual health picture and designed to be sustainable.

What testing is useful before changing my diet?

It depends on your symptoms, but common candidates include ferritin and iron studies, B12, vitamin D, a thyroid panel, hormone testing and blood sugar markers. Testing prevents the most common nutrition mistake: optimizing the wrong thing.

Can you help if I've had a difficult relationship with food?

Yes, your health journey and relationship with food matter. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all nutrition plans or using restriction as the default approach. Instead, we focus on understanding your body, supporting nourishment, and creating a plan that feels safe and sustainable. When more specialized eating disorder support is needed, we collaborate with the appropriate professionals.
