Stress & Burnout
Burnout rarely announces itself; it builds gradually. Sleep gets lighter, patience gets shorter, once-easy tasks start to feel like a struggle, and rest stops restoring you, because your stress physiology has been compensating for months or years. The encouraging part is that this is a physiological process, which means it responds to the right support and steady recovery is realistic.
Burnout symptoms: running on empty and calling it normal?
Your stress response evolved for short emergencies: cortisol and adrenaline surge, the challenge passes, the system resets. Modern stress rarely passes. Under sustained demand, the system that was built to save you starts costing you, disrupting sleep, digestion, immunity, cycles and mood, and eventually producing the exhaustion-plus-detachment state we call burnout.
Burnout is recognized by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomenon, but caregiving, health struggles and invisible labour generate the same physiology. Whatever the source, the state is real, measurable in its effects, and treatable.
You may benefit from an assessment if you experience:
- Exhaustion that sleep doesn't repair
- Feeling wired at night and flat in the morning
- Growing cynicism or detachment from work you used to care about
- Irritability with people you love
- Frequent illness or lingering colds
- Digestive symptoms that track your stress
- Cycles becoming irregular or PMS worsening
- Relying on caffeine to start and wine to stop
What causes burnout?
Sustained Cortisol Demand
Chronically activated stress physiology alters sleep architecture, blood sugar, immunity and reproductive hormones. The system does not fail suddenly; it adapts in ways that feel like slowly losing yourself.
Sleep Debt
Stress fragments sleep, and fragmented sleep amplifies next-day stress reactivity, a loop that deepens over months. Restoring sleep is usually the first structural repair.
Depleted Reserves
High-demand seasons burn through iron, magnesium and B vitamins while appetite and eating patterns slip. Depletion then masquerades as pure stress, making everything heavier than it needs to be.
Conditions Hiding Underneath
Thyroid dysfunction, anemia and depression each overlap heavily with burnout. Testing distinguishes them, which matters because their treatments differ.
The Maths of Demand and Recovery
Burnout often happens when you're giving more than you're able to recover from. While we can support your body through nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, and targeted treatment, lasting improvement also means finding ways to build more recovery into your day-to-day life. We'll help you work on both.

How is burnout tested?
We'll take a close look at what's contributing to your burnout, including your stress levels, sleep, energy throughout the day, and how long you've been feeling this way. We may also recommend blood work to rule out common contributors like thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, low vitamin B12, low vitamin D, or blood sugar imbalances. Because burnout and mental health can overlap, we'll also talk about your mood and make sure you're getting the right support.
How is burnout treated?
Recovery looks different for everyone, but it often starts with supporting the foundations: improving sleep, balancing blood sugar, correcting nutrient deficiencies, and helping your nervous system recover from chronic stress. Your treatment plan may include nutrition and lifestyle changes, stress management strategies, movement that's appropriate for your energy level, evidence-informed supplements, and herbal medicine when appropriate.
Burnout doesn't happen overnight, and recovery takes time. We'll help you build a realistic plan, monitor your progress, and support you every step of the way.
How Somewhere Health helps
Care starts with the bigger picture rather than a single test. If you've already been diagnosed, we build on what you know. If you suspect something deeper but have never had a full workup, we can order the testing that gets you clear answers.
Your first visit is 75 minutes with a licensed naturopathic doctor who has reviewed your full intake. Together you'll create a plan that may include nutrition and lifestyle changes, targeted supplementation, and functional testing where appropriate. Bloodwork happens at any LifeLabs or Dynacare, and specialty panels like the DUTCH test ship to your door.
Appointments are completely virtual, so you can access care from anywhere in Ontario, and visits are covered by most extended health benefits plans.
