Painful and heavy periods, low mood, weight gain, poor sleep. What does estrogen have to do with it?
As women, our hormone levels are always in flux, over our lifetime, monthly and even throughout the day. It's no wonder that when our hormone levels get out of whack we totally notice it.
'Estrogen Dominance' is a higher-than-normal ratio of estrogen to progesterone in the body.
Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance can include:
- Mid-section weight gain
- Low mood or anxiety
- Bloating
- Headaches and migraines (especially around your period)
- Painful or heavy periods
- Fibroids
- Painful or fibrocystic breasts
- Acne
- Poor sleep
Estrogen Dominance can occur when:
- you overproduce estrogen
- you're not metabolizing estrogen well
- you underproduce progesterone (due to PCOS, stress, not eating well etc.)
How can a Naturopathic Doctor help?
- Requisition lab work to dig deeper and uncover why you're experiencing a hormonal imbalance
- Work together to implement a specific plan to help treat the underlying cause of your hormonal imbalance instead of just the symptoms. As NDs we focus on a holistic approach including a research-based diet, supplements, botanicals and lifestyle plan to optimize hormones.
- Focus on maintaining a healthy hormonal balance to meet your long-term goals (pregnancy, managing PMS/PCOS, weight loss, mood etc.)
